South Eastman Health/Santé Sud-Est Inc.

South Eastman Region

The South Eastman Region provides the best of both worlds – life in a country environment with proximity to urban amenities. The community spirit in South Eastman is evident in the diversity of ethno-cultural groups found in over 80 communities within the region, and in the respect for traditional values. Manitoba’s modern history is set in the south eastern part of the province, with communities of French-Canadian, German-Mennonite, Dutch, and Ukrainian descent. The vibrant and progressive region, which is the fastest growing in Manitoba, offers an established sense of community.

South Eastman covers approximately 10,000 square kilometers, encompassing 13 municipalities, one First Nations Community, and unorganized territory. The population numbers around 60,000, representing almost 5% of the provincial total and 11% of the rural Manitoba total. Overall, the South Eastman population is somewhat younger than the general Manitoba population, with a greater percentage of children under age 15 (24% vs. 20%) and a smaller percentage of seniors age 65+ (11% vs. 14%). Increasing immigration and a rising birth rate have led to 8.1% population growth between 1998 and 2003, an increase far in excess of levels in other regions. While English is the home language for 70% of South Eastman residents, 14% use French at home, and 16% use a non-official language at home.

Programs and services

The strength of the RHA is its people! South Eastman Health/Santé Sud-Est Inc. is a designated bilingual RHA committed to ensuring health services and programs are of the highest quality possible and available to you in a timely and respectful fashion through dedicated employees and volunteers.

The RHA has an active commitment to quality improvement and risk management. There are 12 quality improvement teams representing every program and service provided to residents of the region. Through the Quality Improvement Program, the RHA is working towards continuously evaluating its services by measuring outcomes, comparing the region's approach to others in the health field, and seeking out "best practices" which can be adopted in the region.

The RHA owns and operates four hospitals, three personal care homes and two primary health care centres in the region. In addition, health-related program services are offered in seven community services centres located throughout the region. There are also four personal care homes in the region which are contract facilities. Although they are not owned by the RHA, they receive funding from the RHA and operate according to the RHA's standards.

Fee-for-service physicians in South Eastman are paid directly by Manitoba Health and operate their clinics independently of the RHA. While the RHA is not directly responsible for physician services, close collaboration exists with them to ensure information is exchanged and health issues are addressed. The RHA does have a number of contract physicians located at the health centres in Vita and St. Pierre-Jolys. These physicians are paid by the RHA.
