North Eastman RHA

North Eastman Region:

The North Eastman region geography is very expansive, covering an area of approximately 35,000 km2. The region is bounded on the east by the Ontario border, the north by the 53rd parallel, the west by the Red River and Lake Winnipeg and the south by the Trans-Canada Highway with the exceptions of portions of the R.M.s of Springfield and Reynolds which project south of the Highway. While the southerly part of the region is primarily an agricultural area, the remainder of North Eastman is set amidst the boreal forest and is interspersed with a multitude of waterways in which are nestled several resort communities. Much of the Winnipeg River area has been defined by several hydroelectric dams. The northerly areas are very remote and accessible via a winter road system and by air, which isolates the First Nations communities of Poplar River, Pauingassi, Bloodvein, Berens River and Little Grand Rapids. The significant distance between many of our communities poses many service delivery challenges. The population of the region as of March 20, 1996 is 38,093.
