Health Employment Manitoba - Healthy Opportunities, Caring Careers

The province has implemented several new initiatives designed to support Canadian/Manitoba medical students and physicians studying or practicing medicine abroad or in another Canadian province, to practice in Manitoba. Interested physicians/students can now take advantage of several new provincial initiatives designed to help them live, practice, and play in Manitoba.

Grants

Physician Resettlement Fund

The Province is happy to introduce a new fund designed to incent physicians to move to areas of Manitoba where they are needed most, particularly in northern/remote areas. The value of each grant is therefore dependent on where in Manitoba the physician chooses to relocate. Please see the grant schedule [PDF] to view the values available for each grant. The fund is open to physicians who may have previously received assistance through the Medical Student/Resident Financial Assistance Program (MSRFAP) and is available through all Regional Health Authorities (RHAs) in the Province. Private Clinics are also eligible to access the funds with the approval of the RHA administration in the clinic’s area of operation. All applicants are required to possess College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) certification. In return for payment, grant recipients are required to sign a one (1) year Return of Service Agreement (ROS) with their respective employer. To download an application, please click here [PDF].

Specialist Recruitment Fund

Eligible specialists that are interested in relocating to identified, approved, vacant positions in Manitoba may apply for a Specialist Recruitment grant. The Specialist Recruitment Fund is available through all Regional Health Authorities (RHAs) in the Province. Private Clinics are also eligible to access the funds with the approval of the RHA administration in the clinic’s area of operation. Please note that the fund is now open to physicians who may have previously received assistance through the Medical Student/Resident Financial Assistance Program (MSRFAP). Specialists may receive funding from both the Specialist Recruitment Fund and the Physician Resettlement Fund. In return for payment, the specialist is required to sign a one (1) year Return of Service Agreement (ROS) with their respective employer. To download an application, please click here [PDF].

Enhancements to the Medical Student and Resident Financial Assistance Program (MSRFAP)

On December 09, 2010, the Province announced significant enhancements to the Medical Student/Resident Financial Assistance Program (MSRFAP). The new grant program replaces and strengthens existing provincial medical student grants that were previously available to students in their third and fourth year of studies. Under the new Program, Manitoba medical students will be eligible for grants of $12,000 in each of their four years of medical school. Each grant requires a commitment to return six months of service to under-serviced populations upon graduation. When combined with other rebates already in place, the new Program will fully cover medical education costs for those students that commit to provide service in areas of the province where they are needed most. The new Program will be available to medical students beginning in the fall of 2011. During the transition, students entering third and fourth year will have the opportunity to choose between the current MSRFAP program parameters and the newly proposed options.

The MSRFAP provides financial assistance, in the form of a conditional grant, to students studying medicine in the Province of Manitoba, or to physicians establishing a practice in the Province upon graduation. For more information, please visit the MSRFAP page on the Manitoba Health website.

Aboriginal Medical Student Financial Assistance Program (AMSFAP)

Manitoba’s medical graduates are the foundation of the future of healthcare in this province. The Province of Manitoba has established the Aboriginal Medical Student Financial Assistance Program (AMSFAP) to augment the number of Aboriginal students in the undergraduate medical education program at the University of Manitoba and to increase the number of Aboriginal physicians practicing in the province.

The AMSFAP provides financial assistance in the form of an interest-free conditional grant to aboriginal students studying medicine in the province of Manitoba. Note that if Return of Service is not fulfilled, interest will be charged only from the training end date until the conditional grant is repaid in one lump sum.

For more information, please visit the AMSFAP page on the Manitoba Health website.
