Central RHA
Central Region:
With an area of approximately 17,500 km2, the Central Region extends from the International border in the south to the eastern edge of Lake Manitoba in the north; from the Red River in the east to the Pembina River Valley in the West, with the Trans-Canada Highway crossing it horizontally. As of June 1996, the population of the Central Region was 96,631. Portage la Prairie is the largest city in the region with a population of 14,319 which represents approximately 15% of the total population. The town of Winkler is the second largest center with a population of 9,987, followed by the town of Morden with 6,353 people.

Set against a backdrop of rolling hills and rivers in southern central Manitoba, the Regional Health Authority -- Central Manitoba Inc. extends over 18,500 square kilometres from the western edge of the Pembina Valley to the Red River in the East. It expands from Lake Manitoba in the North to the International border in the South with the Trans Canada Highway crossing it horizontally.
The most populated of the province's Rural and Northern Regions with over 98,000 people, Central Region has 8.5% of the province's total population. Farmland and fields adjoin vibrant communities that bustle as centres of agriculture and industry.
The population density is 5.5 persons per square kilometre or 14 persons per square mile, with the Southeast having the highest density. Portage la Prairie is the largest city, followed by the City of Winkler and the Town of Morden.
The population age distribution of Central Region is representative of Manitoba as a whole, with similar proportions of Treaty First Nation residents. Children under 15 years comprise a quarter of the population, whereas nearly 14% is over 65 years of age. There is an equivalent ratio of male and female residents in the Region; however, the age distribution curve demonstrates a greater number of older females than males.
Central Region is home to a rich variety of cultural groups. It is notable that the majority of the Central Region labour force is employed in agricultural and related industries, retail trade and health and social services.
In carrying out the Regional Health Authority -- Central Manitoba Inc. mission, the Chief Executive Officer, directs and oversees the activities of more than 3,200 employees and great many volunteers. There are currently 14 acute care sites, 15 personal care homes, 11 home care office, 13 public health units, 8 mental health offices, crisis services and the Karen Devine Safe House, 14 Services to Seniors community resource councils and 14 ambulance services.
