Geography:

The Assiniboine Region covers an area of 32,134 square kilometres, expanding from the northwestern point of the Saskatchewan border in the Rural Municipality of Shellmouth-Bolton near the community of Russell, continuing down the Saskatchewan border where it meets the USA border, and extends south-east to the Rural Municipality of South Norfolk near Treherne, and north to the Rural Municipality of Glenella in the Neepawa area. The new Region continues to include Riding Mountain National Park. Brandon, the major centre servicing the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority is within 30-90 minutes of most communities in the Region. The towns at the eastern end of the Region are within 90 minutes of the city of Winnipeg. Russell, located at the northwestern point of the Region, is approximately 30 minutes from the city of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Both the Trans Canada and Yellowhead Highway are major transportation corridors within the Region.

The Regional Health Authority:

The Assiniboine Regional Health Authority has an annual operating budget in excess of $100,000,000. The Region employs over 3,000 people and operates 20 acute care facilities, one transitional care unit, 28 long-term care facilities, and seven elderly persons housing units. The region provides public health, mental health, diagnostic, emergency medical, and home care services. There are sixty-four physicians providing medical services in the area.

Language:

Predominately English. The Region is a designated bilingual Health Authority.

Population:

The Assiniboine Regional Health Authority is home to approximately 69,371 people. The majority of the citizens are English descendants. There is also a large Ukrainian population. Within the Region there are seven First Nation Communities, predominately found in the northern part of the Region and twenty-eight Hutterite Colonies disbursed throughout the Region. Twenty percent of our population are aged 65 years and older.

Major Industry:

The main industry throughout the Assiniboine Region is mixed agriculture. Secondary industries include mixed manufacturing, service sector, tourism, and transportation.

Housing:

Generally housing and property prices are lower throughout the Assiniboine Region than in major service centres such as Winnipeg and Brandon. Average rental costs vary between $200.00 and $600.00 per month. Many people living in the Assiniboine area own homes, with prices ranging from $20,000 one bedroom homes to $70,000-$100,000 for three/four bedroom homes. In larger centres such as Neepawa, Minnedosa, Souris, and Virden, upper-end homes may sell in the $125,000-$175,000 range.
