At 61,000 square kilometres, Interlake-Eastern RHA represents approximately one-tenth of Manitoba’s area. The Interlake-Eastern region is a geographical area which extends east to the Ontario border, north to the 53rd parallel, and west to Lake Manitoba. It is home to over 124,000 people living in one city (Selkirk), six towns (Arborg, Gimli, Stonewall, Teulon, Beausejour & Winnipeg Beach), two Local Government Districts (Pinawa and Alexander) and five villages (Riverton, Dunnottar, Lac du Bonnet, Garson, and Powerview). There are also twenty rural municipalities, 17 First Nation communities, 24 Métis communities and a large area that is defined as unorganized territories, which tends to be largely unpopulated.

The region is made up of a wide variety of geographical features which includes elements such as natural lake borders as part of the Red River Valley to agricultural and parklands to beaches and marshlands. The population more than doubles in the summer with vacationers and cottage owners enjoying multitude of beaches along Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba as well as the Hecla/Grindstone, Whiteshell, Nopiming and Atikaki Provincial Parks and resort communities.
The economy of the region is diverse and includes farming, mining, forestry, and hydroelectric power. Recreation and tourism have a significant role in the economy with a highly developed network of seasonal recreational activities including boating, fishing, hunting and other great summer activities. Winter draws to the area include snowmobiling trails, ice fishing, and cross country skiing. There are a large number of seasonal and all-season cottages.
The tourism and recreational activity has a direct impact on the demand for health care services in the region. Potential for significant increases in demand for emergency services, physician services, and hospital care exists during these peak tourist seasons.
